Beginning with a dissertation about popular reception to the stained glass of Chartres in the medieval and modern eras, I have continued to be fascinated by the medium and its effects on perception and experience. My work with stained glass has been joined by thinking on other affective media of the Middle Ages, namely ivory, alabaster, manuscripts, and wood. My article “Glazing and Glossing: Stained Glass as Literary Interpretation” (in a volume co-edited by Elizabeth Pastan and Mary Shepard) has opened up questions of the effects of stained glass within poetic imagery.
